Antique porcelain signs were created in a time when skilled artisans hand made each finished piece, using techniques which today seem out of step with modern manufacturing methods.
Today, in our mountain art studio, we are recreating this authentic art form using the exact, time consuming methods as used in the past. Our artisans first apply by hand, one by one, the different colors of vitreous glass. The glass is then bonded to the steel by firing in a small kiln at around1800 degrees Fahrenheit (the precise temperature depends on the design, as different colors require different temperatures.) As the newly forged piece leaves the oven, both glass and steel glow with heat, slowly revealing the rich colors as the surface cools.
Because our steel is folded into a reinforced box shape, it needs no frame, and there are no holes to mar the surface art. Instead, we provide a hanging wire, so that your DejaVu sign is ready to be elegantly displayed with the rest of your art collection.
